If these rumors are true, my 2030 garage may include a 5 year old Land Cruiser and 255-hp  86....

Who am I kidding, it’ll be a current-gen 10 year old Land Cruiser and probably one of those hospital beds that has a built-in TV remote.

The Land Cruiser will reportedly receive changes many have been crying out for. Namely, it will be a dedicated off-roader, instead of a luxury yacht. The next generation will allegedly be Tundra-based, have just five seats, and be significantly cheaper. The report did not provide a launch date.

HHFP: nope. It will be a 200 series successor in every way, though im sure they will offer a decontented version for other markets . Power will be a twin turbo V6 with mild hybrid in the US . No diesel is a possibility . Tundra based in that ALL trucks will be based around TNGA-F. One of the challenges Toyota faces right now is making the Tundra inexpensive enough and the La nd Cruiser tough enough using the same platform.

A new generation of the Tundra full-size pickup will reportedly arrive in December 2021 for the 2022 model year. It will run on a new TNGA-F truck platform, and replace the aging V8 with a twin-turbo V6 hybrid in top-trim forms.

HHFP: Pretty much.

The next-generation Tacoma is reportedly going to arrive in 2024. Toyota could potentially unify the model with the Hilux that’s sold internationally. No word on whether the now ancient six-speed automatic transmission will depart.

HHFP: nope. Hilux and Tacoma are VERY different sizes for different customers. plan on the 8 speed transmission and a NA v6 as well as a Turbo and or hybrid 4. TNGA-F based. This will be the interesting bit...how do you make the Tacoma common with the Land Cruiser and Tundra? Very interesting.

New versions of Toyota’s two aging SUVs will reportedly arrive in 2022 for the 2023 model year. Those models, for the record, were last overhauled in 2007 ( the Sequoia ) and 2009 (the 4Runner ).”

HHFP: They might replace the Sequoia, they might not. The 4runner/GX is 100% coming on this timeline. Frankly they need to be on sale NOW. 8 speed auto.

We all know how conservative Toyota is, but their lineup is ridiculously outdated. I purchased a Tundra in ‘07 and the 20 is pretty much the same. I purchased a 4Runner in 04 and, yeah, we’ve had a model change but I cross shopped a ‘19 4 Runner when I was shopping last year and the runner was missing so many tech features that we take for granted in the luxury and near luxury market...even in their top line models.

Time for all their models to get into the ‘20’s.

A sibling got a 20 16 with every option and didn’t have  little dumb things like automatic headlights. For a 40k vehicle it was nuts

When you spend the semester sitting in the back of the class next to Nissan and quit doing your homework

Who would have ever thought that both Toyota and Nissan would out do the Squarebody Chevy in production length  of a single model? I can’t tell if it’s complacency, or if it’s simply an acknowledgement that since they can’t compete with the sales volume of the “American” trucks, then they need to keep the body styles in production a lot longer, to amortize the design/development/tooling costs.

I don’t believe that the land cruiser will be a significant departure from the 200, but if they can share platforms with the Tundra, Tacoma, and Sequoia, it might have some good cost savings. I do hope that they either sell it for less, or give the US actual packages rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

I think they are looking at the sales figures in the US and trying to figure out how to shake things up.  I think a less luxurious model that can take advantage of those cost savings will be on the table.  Currently, according to Toyota, it costs MORE to decontent the Land Cruiser with the current production methodology.

I wonder if they were/are  expecting another SUV market crash and were hoping to time the market? Nobody wants to be like GM and roll out the Hummer brand just as people stop buying giant trucks.

I can see that. If they could make it more like domestic pickup production, where you can have work trim all the way up to $80k luxury trucks built on the same line, it would be beneficial. Although, they do make work versions for other countries, which i presume are manufactured on the same lines.

They are made on the same lines but there are enough changes that it would make it difficult to make them for US production. I suspect they do weeks or days of a certain production run then switch gears.

I don’t think so, for a couple of reasons. They’re planning to finally redo them in the next couple years, and if the crash happens ... that’s about the time it will might  happen. Also, the major truck makers have each redone their trucks TWICE since Toyo ta last redid the Tundra and Sequoia.
